Welcome to the Digital Sandhills Journal

Sandhills Journal

Hello and Welcome!

Allow me to introduce myself: I am Mary, and I am the owner, writer, photographer, and editor of the (unfortunately former) Sandhills Journal Magazine.

Sandhills Journal was a physical publication about all things North Dakota in my Southeastern section. It told tales of interesting individuals, memories from the neighbors, old shops and new, historical building restorations, family farms, businesses that bring people together, and forgotten history. I gave you celestial events, crazy holidays, tips and tricks for each season, recipes from the region, craft projects, photography, and so much more.

Once upon a time, I had a big dream to run this magazine for the rest of my days. I imagined my grandchildren flipping the fresh pages of my future editions. However, due to personal circumstances, both monetary and largely life-changing, I had to shut it down after its first year. Pushing through to the end was very difficult, yet I fought to give it the four seasons in print it deserved.

I never thought I'd be announcing its closure. To be honest with you, a little part of me died that day. It broke my heart to put an end to all the hard work I had invested in the Sandhills Journal, to say goodbye to the incredible people I had met, and to the experiences I had with my children. They were, more often than not, in tow for these adventures.

I feel as though four years really wasn't that long ago; however, in the grand scheme of things, so much has changed for my family since then. It's hard to know if now is the right time or next year is the right time, but what I do know is that - never is the wrong time. I care about my home, my community, my farm, and my neighbors. Our history is so interesting, and the people here have so much to say. Which is why I decided to try it again in digital form.

Looking Ahead

I know this will be a slow start, but I hope you bear with me as I gather enough photos, interviews, discoveries, and stories to tell. It takes time to build something new.

In print, I am planning for many new things that are timeless and can pass from year to year. Photo books, pamphlets, canvases, stickers, various merchandise, and more. For the yearly prints, I'd like to start with calendars and small seasonal publications. At this moment, I am in the stage of gathering information for the new journey ahead. The rest will come with time.

It would be great to sip my morning coffee from a custom Sandhills Journal coffee mug as I work...right?

Until the day I get enough of a following and the content to keep them coming, I'll just have to stick with my current mug rotation and continue to type away and move forward.

Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter.
Each season will bring new and exciting content. Be it recipes, interviews, photo-ops, or road trips, I hope you come along for the ride. And please pack snacks...I get hungry when I'm creating.

In the meantime, you are welcome to explore my workshop here:

From your barefoot Bohemian,
Ms. Mary
